Santa Monica, CA- Street League Skateboarding took over the Santa Monica pier Friday afternoon for the second stop in the SLS Championship. Guests in attendance ranged from musicians to former Playboy Bunny models.
The competition gathered professional skaters of all ages, from 15-year-olds to mid-thirties, who competed for a $25,000 first-place prize.
The championship tour began May 3rd in Miami before making their stop in Los Angeles.
The event consisted of the Men’s Wild Card Jam where the top two scoring skaters would continue into the Men’s final. In the women’s division, a Women’s final.
The men’s wildcard jam included skaters Angelo Caro, Zion Wright, Tyson Bowerbank, Julian Agliardi, Yuri Facchini, and Ryan Sheckler.
The skaters rotated through the timed session and were based on “overall impression” before doing one final trick. The top two would then advance to the final.
Peruvian skater Angelo Caro completed a nollie 270 and 540 flip that gave him the lead in the wildcard jam.16-year-old Kristion Jordan from Pasadena, CA completed a Backside-360 down a double stack that brought him a close second.
The men’s final included 10 skaters with Shane O’neill, Alex Midler, Louie Lopez, and Chris Joslin among them.
Dashawn Jordan completed a laser down the triple set of stairs, earning a high score of 9.1. Braden Hoban completed an impossible over the triple set earning a 7.7.
Cora’s first trick was a tre flip into a front board that earned an 8.7
Caro nollie 270 onto hubba into backboard earned an 8.7
Cordano Russell remained in the lead with 17.8 points until
Joslin’s first attempt was a failure but the 29-year-old quickly made his way up the leaderboard with a big flip, earning 8.9.
Chris Joslin earned 27.2 points in the final men’s competition Chris Joslin earned his first SLS win, taking home a gold trophy.
Shane O’Neill earned 26.3
Peruvian Angelo Caro came close behind at 26.2 points.
Women’s final
The women were to give their best attempts at 7 single tricks with the top three scores contributing to their final score.
Aoi Uemura’s first trick of the women’s final event was a backside lipslide on the gap to rail, earning a score of 6.1.
Chlole Covell’s first trick of the seven was a kickflip over the triple set of stairs, scoring 7.5.
Margielyn Didal did a nose grind earning herself a score of 5.8.
Covell did a kickflip over the triple set earning a score of 8 points
Uemura completed a Smith Grind earning 6.2.
Umera followed with a gap 5.0 earning 4.7.
Covell’s final trick was a switch flip earning her a score of 8.3.
Australian 15-year-old Chloe Covell took first place with 23.8 points.
Coming in second, 16-year-old Japanese skater Aoi Uemura earned 19.3 points. Margielyn Didal came in last place with a score of 10.9.
The tour continues onto Brazil on July 13th at Esplanade of Ministries.
